Introduction

Hey there!

My name is Lauren. I was born to an American mother and Dutch father (hence why people remember me as "Lauren with the difficult last name"). I recently traveled to Ireland for the first time properly (my actual first time consisted of an 8-hour layover to explore Dublin with my then-boyfriend-now-husband 4.5 years prior to this trip) and unwittingly embarked on a profoundly emotional and spiritual adventure I had not expected. So much so that I’ve decided to invest my time researching my Celtic origins

Because my travels in Ireland were such an overwhelming experience, I am writing down my thoughts, emotions, and findings to not only share this journey with those of you who are similarly interested in Celtic history or family genealogy research in general, but to also better understand these strong feelings myself. Irish history is so bountifully rich and beautifully complex that I wish to offer this written work as tribute in both selfish hopes that I may later be considered by history as part of this magnificent culture and to also understand myself in the context of my time on this earth. Who am I beyond what I’ve lived, outside of or before the years I’ve existed? What societal forces allowed my birth? What untold stories do my ancestors hold and how may their choices have shaped me today without ever having met them? How will I feel about what I find? I welcome you to join me vicariously on my Celtic pilgrimage through whatever records still remain from the annals of time as I attempt to answer these questions.

Most of my blog posts will not be posted in real-time as I wrote them a while ago (likewise, I currently have several drafts in a folder ready for future postings), but I intend for it to be somewhat chronological to my search for family knowledge. I also expect to occasionally depart from Celtic history and delve into American, English, German, and Dutch pasts as I explore some other branches of my family. I welcome questions and thoughtful discussion, so feel free to interact in the comment sections found throughout this blog.
